Additional Title(s)

  • Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering (dry appointment)
  • Program Director, National Science Foundation (NSF), Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS) Program

Prof. Shen joined the faculty of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in Fall 2011, and she works in the intersection of optimization and data analytics. She has received several grants and support from the National Science Foundation, Army Research Office, Department of Energy, and Department of Transportation. She has been the recipient of the Department of Energy (DoE) Early Career Award, IBM Smarter Planet Innovation Faculty Award, and several Best paper awards from various conferences and journals. She currently serves in the editorial boards for Operations Research, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, European Journal of Operational Research, and has served as associate editors for Transportation Science, INFORMS Journal on Computing and several other journals. She has served as an elected board member for the INFORMS Computing Society, track chairs for various IISE/INFORMS conferences, and the general associate chair for the 2022 INFORMS Annual Meeting.

Education

  • PhD, University of Florida, 2011, Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • BS, Tsinghua University, 2007, Industrial Engineering

Research Interests

Prof. Shen’s research is in integer programming, stochastic programming/robust optimization, and network optimization. The models she considers usually feature stochastic parameters and discrete decision variables. In general, optimal solutions are desired for trading off between the immediate benefits and the long-run gains, or between cost effectiveness and operational risk. Applications of her research include design and operations management problems in transportation, energy, healthcare, and quantum computing.
