In Joi Mondisa’s NSF CAREER and research grants, she examines STEM mentoring practices and programs. She also investigates mentoring frameworks and ecosystems that support the leveraging of resources and building of synergies and best practices.
Joi Mondisa, University of Michigan Industrial and Operations Engineering (U-M IOE) Assistant Professor, has received the U-M College of Engineering Monroe-Brown Foundation Education Excellence Award for providing outstanding education in both undergraduate and graduate programs.
“I am honored to be recognized for my work in developing innovative, interactive, and impactful curricula in Engineering 100 and Engineering Education Research courses,” said Mondisa.
In addition to this honor, Mondisa was recently appointed to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Mentorship, Well-Being, and Professional Development. The Roundtable will explore the on-going improvements and innovations in effective mentorship and professional development practices and programs and how to create and maintain an inclusive and equitable higher education and STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine) research ecosystem. Mondisa’s appointment began in January 2023.
In her NSF CAREER and research grants, Mondisa examines STEM mentoring practices and programs. She also investigates mentoring frameworks and ecosystems that support the leveraging of resources and building of synergies and best practices. Mondisa has also received multiple awards for mentoring including the UPS Minority Advancement Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering and U-M’s Dr. Willie Hobbs Moore Aspire, Advance, Achieve Mentoring Award. Additionally, Mondisa is the informal faculty advisor for U-M’s Black Industrial Engineers (BINDx, pronounced bind-ex) Scholars Group. This opportunity has allowed her to mentor numerous engineering students.
Mondisa joined the U-M College of Engineering in 2016. She earned a B.S. in General Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an M.B.A from Governors State University, an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Purdue University. Previously, Mondisa worked in industry for ten years in the areas of manufacturing, operations, technical sales, and publishing. She also taught as an adjunct faculty in the Engineering Technology Program at Triton College in Illinois for seven years.
