Hyesun Chung, a doctoral student in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan (U-M), has been named a 2025 Barbour Scholar. Barbour Scholars are selected from among the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship awardees and represent outstanding female scholars from Asia and the Middle East pursuing graduate degrees at U-M. They have demonstrated exceptional academic achievements, leadership and potential to contribute to their home countries and fields of study.

Chung received her B.S. in Industrial Engineering, B.F.A. in Industrial Design, and her B.B.A., and M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Seoul National University. Her research interests center on human-AI interaction, with a specific focus on trust and team dynamics in collaborative scenarios.

“I am deeply honored and extremely delighted to receive this award,” said Chung. “With the growing adoption of autonomous technologies, humans are increasingly working with AI agents. I aspire to contribute to the development of user-aware agents that enable trustworthy and effective human-AI collaboration. I am grateful to all who have supported my work along the way.”

The Barbour Scholarship, established in 1917, provides financial support to outstanding international women scholars, enabling them to advance their research and academic careers. The fellowship provides three terms of support and includes full tuition, required fees and stipends for one academic year. As a recipient, Chung joins a distinguished group of scholars who have gone on to become leaders in academia, industry, and policy.
