Biography
Uday Shanbhag’s research focuses on developing analytical and computational tools for optimization and equilibrium problems, with applications in power systems, markets, and stochastic statistical learning. He previously held the Gary and Sheila Chaired Professorship in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, where he arrived in Fall 2012. Before his position at Penn. State he was first an assistant professor from 2006–2012, and subsequently a tenured associate professor (for approx. 10 days), in the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Education
- PhD, Management Science and Engineering, Stanford University (2006)
- SM, Operations Research and Technology and Policy Program, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1998)
- B.Tech, Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (1993)
Research Interests
Uday Shanbhag’s research interests lie in the development of analytical tools and scalable computational schemes for optimization and equilibrium problems, with a focus on addressing uncertainty, nonsmoothness and nonconvexity. Much of his research finds application in the realm of power systems and markets, where he has examined a range of questions, including the examination of strategic interactions in multi-settlement markets under uncertainty, the location of electrical substations and dynamic competitive equilibrium models. More recently, he has begun working on a broad class of nonconvex and stochastic statistical learning problems.
Professional Service
- Uday currently serves on the editorial boards of SIAM Journal of Optimization, Computational Optimization and Applications, and Optimization Letters.
