The University of Michigan Industrial and Operations Engineering (U-M IOE) has established a new diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) Committee. The DEI Committee is led by U-M IOE Associate Professor, Leia Stirling, and its members include students, staff and faculty.
“We build committees to achieve goals that are of value to the department,” Stirling said. “By creating a DEI committee, IOE is stating that we value diversity, equity, and inclusion and will support and prioritize actions to meet DEI goals for our IOE community inside and outside of the classroom.”
The DEI Committee is working on projects related to structural, educational and cultural changes, such as; department policies for hiring, broadening recruiting, bringing engineering equity into the classroom, creating a welcoming climate and conducting town halls to hear more from the U-M IOE community.
The DEI mission statement is as follows:
At U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering, we value diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for all people in our community. We advance scientific and mathematical methods to help solve human-centered local and global challenges; meaning we impact people, processes, and systems around us through generating and analyzing data across a range of applications. Therefore, we view DEI as interwoven with our research, teaching, and community involvement.
If you have questions or ideas for the committee please email Stirling at [email protected].
