Biography

Dr. Smith is the Altarum/ERIM Russell D. O’Neal Professor Emeritus of Engineering and Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. He has taught courses in stochastic processes, queueing systems, and dynamic programming. His research interests include the optimization of complex systems using global optimization methods and the determination of planning and forecast horizons for decision making over time. Dr. Smith was Director of the Dynamic Systems Optimization Laboratory at the University of Michigan. He has been honored with the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award from the University of Michigan, the College of Engineering Research Excellence Award, an Outstanding Teacher Award from the Michigan Student Assembly and is a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. Dr. Smith is Associate Editor of Operations Research and past Associate Editor of Management Science and is the author of over one hundred peer reviewed publications.
