Professor Van Oyen's research interests center on the use of worker cross-training, flexible machines and other mechanisms to create agile operations that enhance supply chain performance. He is particularly interested in applied probability and the control of queueing networks and other discrete-event systems. Prior to joining the U of M, Dr. Van Oyen has previously taught courses in probability, stochastic processes, simulation, Markov decision processes, operations management, supply chain management, and management of business process improvement. He is Associate Editor for Operations Research and for Naval Research Logistics. Dr. Van Oyen served on the research staff of GE Corporate R&D of Schenectady, New York as well in systems analysis and simulation for Smith's Industries.
