Professor Coffey is the Director of Program and Operations Analysis Department at The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers. He teaches IOE 481, Special Projects in Hospital Systems, and special courses focusing on the healthcare industry. Professor Coffey's current primary research involves improvement of leadership, quality, and cost effectiveness within the healthcare industry, and he has performed and supervised analyses in virtually all areas of healthcare management and planning. Dr. Coffey is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, American Management Association, American Society for Quality, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, IIE, and Michigan Hospital Management Systems Society. He is a member of the editorial advisory board for the Joint Commission Journal on Quality Improvement, and has co-authored three books, two of which have won national awards. He has authored chapters in six books, and written over 35 articles.
