Richard Hughes worked at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the Mayo Clinic following the completion of his doctoral studies. He joined the faculty of the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan in 1998 and the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering in 2008. He is director of the Laboratory for Optimization and Computation in Orthopaedic Surgery (LOCOS), which is housed in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The mission of LOCOS is to improve the cost-effectiveness of musculoskeletal healthcare through collaborative research between quantitative researchers and physicians. Research tools include methods from operations research (mathematical programming, stochastic simulation, statistics), clinical investigation, and bioengineering (biomechanical modeling and laboratory testing). His research currently focuses on integrating cost-effectiveness considerations into the design of orthopedic devices and diagnostic testing. |
